SUNO Men's Basketball Unveils 2025-26 Schedule
Knights look to build on momentum behind returning stars and key newcomers
The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Men's Basketball team has officially announced its 2025–26 season schedule, featuring a competitive slate of opponents from across the region. The Knights, under the leadership of Head Coach James A. Matthews III, are primed for another thrilling year as they look to build on last season's strong performance. Matthews was also recently named RICE FAME Group HBCU Makeda Excellence Awards Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.
The Knights' campaign tips off October 25, 2025, against Texas A&M University–San Antonio, followed by a series of early tests including matchups against Xavier University of Louisiana (Oct. 29 and Nov. 13), William Carey University (Nov. 6 and Dec. 18), and a crosstown showdown with the University of New Orleans (Nov. 8).
SUNO will also face several NAIA and HBCUAC powerhouses, including Paul Quinn College, Philander Smith University, Dillard University, and Tougaloo College, as well as a highly anticipated road game at Northwestern State University on December 20.
Star Power Returns to the Court
Leading the charge once again is Jamal "Tall" Gibson, the reigning HBCUAC Back-to-Back Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Gibson dominated the 2024–25 season, averaging 21.0 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game, while setting new SUNO single-season records for total points (630), rebounds (474), and double-doubles (29). His impact on both ends of the court has made him one of the most feared players in small-college basketball.
Joining him is Donte Briggs, the dynamic guard who was named the 2025 HBCUAC Freshman of the Year. Briggs quickly became a fan favorite with his explosive scoring ability and court vision, ranking No. 3 in the conference for 3-point shooting, hitting 40% from beyond the arc. His leadership and poise will be essential as the Knights seek another deep postseason run.
The Knights also return Isaiah Lewis, a powerful forward known for his toughness in the paint. Lewis's willingness to battle inside and finish through contact made him a key contributor last season. His rebounding presence and defensive energy continue to make him one of SUNO's most reliable frontcourt players.
New Faces, New Energy
Coach Matthews has also bolstered his roster with several exciting newcomers, including Jaylon Hicks, Dorian Booker, and Jakobe Dykes—each expected to make an immediate impact. The trio brings versatility, athleticism, and depth to a roster already stacked with proven talent.
"This group has the potential to be special," said Coach Matthews. "We've got experienced leaders in Gibson, Briggs, and Lewis who set the tone every day, and our newcomers are hungry and ready to contribute. The schedule is tough, but that's how we get better. We want to compete against the best."
A Season to Remember
The Knights finished the 2024–25 season with impressive wins, including a 70-62 victory over Philander Smith University and an 82-78 win against Xavier University (LA), while pushing several top-ranked programs to the wire. With a balanced mix of veterans and new talent, SUNO aims to continue its rise as a powerhouse within the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC).
