SUNO Men's Basketball Duo Earns Player of the Week Honors
The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) men's basketball team continues to make waves early in the 2024-25 season, with two Knights earning conference recognition following their standout performances in Saturday's 86-81 Homecoming win over Texas A&M – San Antonio. The HBCU Athletic Conference made the announcement this week, honoring players' performances for the week of October 20-26.
Reigning HBCUAC Player of the Year Jamal "Tall" Gibson was named HBCUAC Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman guard Jaylon Hicks earned HBCUAC Freshman of the Week honors.
Hicks electrified the crowd in his SUNO debut, posting a game-high 24 points along with six assists, five rebounds, one steal, and one block. The dynamic freshman proved to be a spark for the Knights, using his athleticism to push the tempo and create scoring chances on both ends of the floor. His poise and energy were key in helping SUNO maintain control throughout the contest.
Gibson showcased the dominance that made him one of the nation's most versatile big men last season. The sophomore forward delivered a 23-point, 17-rebound double-double — his first of the new season — and added four assists, three steals, and two blocks. His presence in the paint anchored SUNO's defense, while his leadership helped the Knights stay composed down the stretch.
