SUNO Men’s Basketball Dominates Paul Quinn, 84–62, Behind Strong Performances From Jackson and Hicks
Southern University at New Orleans Men's Basketball closed out Saturday in commanding fashion, rolling past Paul Quinn College 84–62 at The Castle. The Knights improved to 2-0 in HBCUAC play, powered by a balanced offense, stifling defense, and decisive scoring runs built on their energy and depth.
Junior Tynerion Jackson and freshman Jaylon Hicks led the Knights with 15 points and seven rebounds each, anchoring the SUNO attack on a night where ten different players scored and the Knights posted 26 assists on 33 made field goals.
Early Spark Turns Into First-Half Control
After Paul Quinn scored the opening basket, SUNO quickly seized momentum. Freshman Dorian "Pop" Booker tied the game with a jumper before Hicks went to work on the offensive glass, converting a putback to give SUNO its first lead. The Knights' pace and ball movement began to take over, highlighted by a stretch at the 16-minute mark where Hicks assisted Caleb Williams on a corner three, then Jackson entered and immediately buried a midrange jumper off a Hicks feed to push the lead to 9–4.
SUNO's second unit extended the advantage as Aumad Hackett drilled a three at 13:42, followed by back-to-back jumpers from Jackson and a Williams triple that pushed the margin to double digits.
Paul Quinn briefly cut the lead to four after a 6–0 run, but SUNO answered with a decisive surge. At the 7:43 mark, Jakobe Dykes knocked down a three, followed by a Donte Briggs triple one minute later. Moments after a Jackson steal, Erroll Smith connected on ajumper to give SUNO a 29–17 cushion.
The Knights closed the half strong, with Jackson scoring twice more in the final minutes and Hicks knocking down a deep three at 1:36. SUNO carried a 42–30 lead into halftime, shooting an impressive 51.6% from the field and 53.8% from three in the opening period.
Second-Half Push Puts the Game Out of Reach
SUNO maintained complete control from the opening possession of the second half. Isaiah Lewis, who finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and three assists, opened with a score inside before assisting Booker on a jumper moments later.
After a Paul Quinn basket at 18:43, SUNO erupted on a 12–2 run fueled by stops, ball pressure, and second-chance opportunities. Booker hit another jumper, Briggs added a pull-up, and by the time Hicks connected on a midrange jumper at 14:08, the Knights had extended the lead to 58–32.
SUNO's depth continued to shine. Smith drilled a corner three at the 6:20 mark—giving SUNO its largest lead at 74–42—off a precise feed from Hackett. Hicks added another three with 6:46 remaining, finishing 3-of-5 from deep, and Jackson closed out the night with a jumper with 23 seconds left, leading to the Knights 84-62 win over the Tigers.
