Men’s Basketball Back in Action against Loyola to Kick Off Second Half of Season
Game Preview: SUNO Men's Basketball at Loyola (La.)
Monday, January 5 | 7 p.m. | Loyola (La.) | Urban Edge Network
The Southern University at New Orleans men's basketball team travels to Loyola University (La.) for a 7 p.m. tip on Monday, January 5. The game marks a rematch of a thrilling early-season contest on November 13, when the Knights fell just short in a 96–95 double-overtime battle that came down to execution in the final possessions.
That night in at The Castle, SUNO showed it could go toe-to-toe with the Wolfpack, building momentum with physical play inside and timely scoring stretches, but Loyola's ability to get to the free-throw line and make plays late ultimately proved to be the difference. Now, with conference play underway and lessons learned, the Knights enter Monday's game with a clear blueprint for what it will take to flip the result in a difficult road environment.
Win the Paint, Win the Game
A major focus for SUNO will be establishing control inside, starting with Dorian "Pop" Booker and Ty Jackson. In the first meeting, the Knights found success attacking the paint and creating second-chance opportunities, but consistency on both ends will be critical this time around. Booker's ability to score through contact and rebound in traffic, paired with Jackson's energy and presence around the rim, gives SUNO a chance to neutralize Loyola's interior production.
Defensively, the Knights must be more disciplined in the paint, limiting deep post touches and avoiding unnecessary fouls that allow the Wolfpack to set the tone at the free-throw line. Finishing defensive possessions with rebounds will be just as important as scoring on the other end.
Guards Set the Tempo
Equally important will be guard play. Loyola thrives when games become fast-paced and free-flowing, especially at home. For SUNO, controlling the tempo is a must. The Knights' guards will be tasked with valuing possessions, limiting turnovers, and running the offense with purpose to keep the Wolfpack from turning defense into quick offense.
By getting into sets, attacking mismatches, and making Loyola defend for a full shot clock, SUNO can slow the game down and play to its strengths. Strong on-ball defense and communication on the perimeter will also be key to contesting shots and preventing momentum-shifting runs.
Momentum on the Line
A road win at Loyola would be more than just payback—it would be a significant confidence boost as SUNO continues conference play. With a challenging stretch ahead, including a road game at Tougaloo College on January 10, Monday's contest represents an opportunity to set the tone for the rest of the season.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Loyola. The game will be broadcast live on Urban Edge Network. Fans can watch online at urbanedgenetwork.net/watch/4887

The Knights know what slipped away the last time these two teams met. On Monday night, they'll look to turn those lessons into a statement win.
