Lawrence Earns HBCUAC Defensive Player and Newcomer of the Week Honors
NEW ORLEANS — Southern University at New Orleans guard Jermaine Lawrence has been named the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday ahead of the 2026 Hope Credit Union HBCUAC Basketball Championship Tournament.
Lawrence turned in one of the most impactful all-around performances of the season, dominating both ends of the floor to help power the Knights.
The newcomer delivered an outstanding offensive showing, scoring 21 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting (77.8%) from the field while knocking down 7-of-9 free throws. He also played a key role in the Knights' offensive rhythm, recording six assists to help facilitate scoring opportunities for his teammates.
Defensively, Lawrence was a force throughout the contest. He controlled the glass with 15 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive end, limiting second-chance opportunities for the opposition. His defensive activity extended beyond rebounding as he recorded six steals and five blocks, consistently disrupting passing lanes and protecting the rim.
Lawrence's dominant two-way effort highlighted his versatility and impact as the Knights prepare to compete for a conference championship this week.
The weekly honors mark another milestone for the SUNO program as the Knights head into postseason play with momentum.
