Smith Named HBCUAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Southern University at New Orleans' basketball playerJakhiya Smith earned player of the week honors for her performances during the opening weekend of conference play. The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference made the announcement late last week, highlighting the top players in the league for the week of November 17-23. Smith was tabbed HBCUAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith was incredible in the paint, helping the Lady Knights to a split in their first two conference games. In Thursday's win over Huston-Tillotson, 12 of Smith's 19 rebounds were on the defensive end. She added four blocks, one which sealed the game. Against Paul Quinn on Saturday, she added five defensive rebounds. Smith ranks third in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) with 1.6 blocks per game. Her play has helped SUNO get off to their best start since 2012-13.

The Knights return to action December 4 to take on Wiley University. The doubleheader matchup will be held inside of Wiley's Alumni Gymnasium with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Urban Edge Network.
