Knights Sweep Panthers in HBCUAC West Division Battle
The SUNO Knights made a statement on their home field this weekend, sweeping the Philander Smith Panthers in a three-game series at Wesley Barrow Stadium to move to 16-13 overall and 11-7 in HBCUAC play.
The Knights broke open Game 1 with a furious five-run second inning, erasing a 3-0 first-inning deficit. Braylon Guerin was relentless on the basepaths throughout the series, setting the tone with four stolen bases in the opener alone. Kyler Shepherd drove in the go-ahead run with a double to right, and the Knights added four more in the third to put the game away, 9-4. Christopher Nunez picked up the win, going six innings and allowing only three earned runs.
Game 2 was the signature performance of the weekend. Dylan Jimenez was untouchable on the mound, spinning a complete-game shutout — allowing just two hits while striking out 10 Panthers in a dominant 11-0 victory. SUNO's speed was on full display again, with Guerin contributing four more stolen bases and Caden Cantu stealing home in the fourth inning to cap a three-run frame. Enrique Herazo, Jr. drove the offense with two steals and an RBI, and Avery Spriggs and Miles Bowens each reached base multiple times to keep the pressure constant.
Sunday's series finale saw the Knights at their most explosive, putting up 15 runs on 19 hits. SUNO built an early lead before a massive four-run sixth inning stretched it to 10-2. Donovan Hill tripled home a run in the sixth and finished with two RBI on the day. With the game in hand in the eighth, Jimenez went deep for a two-run home run to left field, and Cantu followed moments later with a solo shot to left center — giving SUNO a 15-5 final. Shepherd added two more RBI with a double, finishing the series as one of the Knights' most consistent contributors at the plate. Enrique Herazo, Jr. started and went six innings, earning the series-clinching win on the mound.
Across the three games, SUNO outscored Philander Smith 35-9 and stole a remarkable 17 total bases as a team — a signature of the Knights' aggressive style under pressure. The sweep solidifies their hold in the West Division standings heading into a pivotal final stretch.
