SUNO Pushes NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State to the Limit in Five-Set Thriller
The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Knights showed the heart, energy, and determination, taking NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University to five sets before narrowly falling 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 26-28, 25-20, 15-11) on Saturday afternoon at The Castle.
While the Knights compete at the NAIA level, their performance against the Delta Devils proved once again that level of play does not determine level of fight. SUNO battled point-for-point with MVSU, showing grit, poise, and resilience throughout the match.
The Knights were led by Kiki Alba, who powered down 13 kills on an impressive .385 hitting percentage, while setter Taszia Adkinson fueled the offense with 41 assists, 12 kills, and 13 digs for a near triple-double. KK Dozier (11 kills), Samaria Berry (7 kills, 1 ace), and Malaysia Hudson (6 kills) provided steady offensive support, while libero Armoni Harris anchored the backcourt with a team-high 16 digs.
After dropping a close opening set, SUNO roared back to win the second and pulled off a dramatic 28-26 victory in the third, stunning the Delta Devils and energizing the home crowd. MVSU responded with a fourth-set win to even the match before pulling away late in the decisive fifth.
Despite the loss, the Knights walked away with their heads high. Their ability to compete toe-to-toe with a Division I program highlights the strength and potential of SUNO Volleyball. The Castle was alive with energy as the Knights reminded everyone that NAIA teams can not only belong on the same court as NCAA Division I opponents—they can push them to the brink and win.
With the effort, SUNO moves to 1-5 on the season, but the Knights' heart and fight sent a clear message: this team is fearless, and their best volleyball is still ahead.
